Located in a rough neighborhood, the exterior contains one main entrance leading into a secure interior courtyard. This courtyard is the primary focus of the building, and it encourages a relaxing educational atmosphere. This is the heart of the campus, and all future phases were planned to radiate from this initial structure.

As a branch campus of Yakima Valley Community College, this campus provides for upper level and adult basic educational needs of the Lower Yakima Valley. The facility is approximately 13,000 square feet and houses general-use classrooms, nurse training, specialty classrooms (i.e. science labs) and administrative functions such as office area and registration. This facility was the first of a multiphase program.

HERITAGE COLLEGE - TOPPENISH, WA

Campus Master Planning: 1991-92: $1,804,000

New Library - Learning Resource Center: 1993: $1,804,000

Petrie Hall - Alterations and Modernization: 1994: $640,000

The Library Learning Resource Center was the first new building project on the Heritage College Campus. It was constructed as the result of the colleges long range plan to expand. The 17,400 sq. ft. library also housed the academics skill center, computer laboratories, reading rooms, study rooms and administrative offices for the entire campus. The campus plan was to have the rest of the buildings on campus radiating outward from the central axis of the main library stack area. The library was designed to house 69,500 volumes and will provide computerization access to numerous other resources.

The structure is wood frame with brick veneer and Dryvit exterior accented by a metal roof with deep overhangs. The brick pattern was derived from an intricate basket weave pattern used by the people of the Yakima Indian Nation. The interior is framed with natural finished turned wood columns reaching 26 feet to the heavy timber trusses. The clearstory and full height windows accent the space with natural light.

NACHES VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT JOINT 3 - NACHES, WA

Bus Garage Addition: 1994

Naches Middle School: 1994-95: $5,350,000

Intermediate School Addition: 1994

The Naches Middle School provides 65,385 square feet of administrative and industrial space for fifth through the eighth grades. The facility has a state of the art computer data and video network throughout. The fifth and sixth grade classrooms function around the homeroom/shared work area while the seventh and eight grades move from classroom to classroom for instructions.

The facility is constructed around a central courtyard which allows natural light to the primary classroom spaces. The facility includes spaces for art, science, music, gymnasium, multi-purpose room and technology labs. The outdoor space includes a football field, a baseball field, soccer fields, and open play grounds. This project also included the remodel of the existing bus garage, woodshop, storage facilities and a bus maintenance shop.

DISTRICT #1 GENERAL MAINTENANCE - HELENA, MT

Over a period of a couple of years, District #1 in Helena, MT needed architectural services to perform much needed maintenance. A series of multiple projects included code reviews, energy upgrades, new roofs, window and door replacements, exit stairs and small remodels.

NICHOLSON PAVILION ADDITION - CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, ALLENSBURG, WA

Natatorium & Dance Studio Alterations: 1992: $1,974,000

Nicholson Pavilion Addition was the first major building project on the Central Washington University Campus in over a decade. Campus site planning and building impact studies were conducted to necessitate comprehensive analysis focusing on public circulation, future campus growth and unique relationship to the existing conditions. Alternative sites were also evaluated. Working and communicating closely with the University, these studies were through the pre-design concept and the construction phases. All major features of the project were carefully analyzed.

A new energy efficient mechanical system was connected to the existing campus steam line. It featured variable air volume and computer control of all HVAC components. The electrical system consisted of a state-of-the-art computer distribution system, and energy efficient ballasts and lamps. Specialized natural day lighting concepts were applied to minimize artificial lighting.

JEWETT CHILD CARE CENTER - YAKIMA, WA

The learning atmosphere of our children is very important. At the Jewett Child Care Center, interaction with the structure is a delight to the children. Hanging mobiles, wall and column textures, and moveable blocks were included in the design to encourage curiosity and problem solving skills. The facility includes sleeping rooms, classrooms and a play ground that has an abundance of light.
